“Who was that?” Lester’s eyes darkened a little.

“Mr. Rupert. He’s been downstairs this whole time,” Zion explained.

“I see. I’ll find some time to talk to him.”

After hanging up, Lester walked over to the window and glanced outside.

Under the glow of the streetlamp, the man’s tall, striking figure was easy to spot. He was leaning against his car, smoking.

Almost as if he could sense he was being watched, Rupert suddenly looked up towards the window.

Lester didn’t hesitate—he pulled the curtains shut.

Sylvia, noticing, asked, “What’s up?”

Lester glanced at her and offered a faint smile. “Just being cautious.”

“Alright then.”

“Since we didn’t catch the guy, I’ll just crash on the couch tonight. If there’s any trouble, I’ll hear it right away.”

He made his way back to the sofa and sat down.

Sylvia thought about protesting, but with the stalker still at large, she couldn’t find a good reason to say no.

“Thanks.”

“No problem. I’ll just expect a great breakfast in return,” Lester joked, changing the subject.

“Deal. There’s a huge supermarket nearby—should be easy.”

Sylvia let the matter drop and went to find some clean bedding.

She brought out a spare quilt and pillow, making up a bed for Lester on the couch.

“Sorry to make a big boss like you sleep on the couch.”

“Well, I could always sleep in your room instead,” Lester teased, eyes locking onto hers.

Sylvia pressed her lips together. “Mr. Sanford, do you ever quit with the corny jokes?”

She got up to head back to her room.

But Lester reached out and gently caught her wrist, his eyes serious. “I’m not joking. I’m definitely waiting my turn.”

Sylvia pulled her hand free, cheeks a little flushed. “Alright, alright—I get it!”

She ducked into her room before he could say anything else.
