But Watson showed up.
As one of the partners—and bosses—at the law firm, he never really had to worry about office hours. This time, he came alone, without little Julia in tow. In his hands was a bouquet of pale blue flowers, each blossom perfectly chosen and arranged. The whole thing looked gorgeous.
“Celebrating our Allison finally getting out of the hospital,” Watson said, handing her the flowers.
Allison took them with a grateful smile. “Thank you.”
Javier watched her, concern softening his features. “You’ve lost quite a bit of weight lately.”
Linda jumped in, “Allie, I’m making dinner tonight. Why don’t you come home and let me spoil you a little?”
Allison nodded. “That sounds wonderful. Thank you, Aunt Linda.”
Javier grinned, “Your aunt even got you a gift.”
Linda shot him a playful glare. “Javier! You ruined the surprise!”
He just laughed. “She still doesn’t know what it is, so it’s still a surprise, right?”
Allison grinned at Linda. “It’s okay, Aunt Linda. Dad’s right—if I don’t know what the gift is, it still counts as a surprise.”
“Allie, I got something for you too.” Olivia handed her a gift bag. “Picked it up for you in Switzerland. Want to see?”
Allison recognized the logo—one of those luxury Swiss watch brands.
“Thank you,” she said, her smile genuine.
She opened the box inside and found a beautiful white ladies’ watch.
A real smile bloomed on Allison’s lips. “It’s gorgeous, Olivia. Thank you.”
“Oh, don’t thank me. Here, let me put it on for you.”
“Okay.”
Olivia fastened the watch around Allison’s wrist, nodding with satisfaction. “Looks perfect on you.”
Joshua’s car.
She walked up and tapped softly on the window.
It rolled down, and there he was—handsome as ever.
“What are you doing here?” Allison kept her voice soft, almost shy.
Joshua’s eyes were deep, impossible to read. “I heard you were getting out today. Just wanted to see you.”
The words brushed across her heart, soft as a feather.
“Is your wound healed?” he asked. “Are you hurting anywhere?”
Allison shook her head. “I’m okay.”
Joshua’s gaze dropped to the flowers in her arms, and his voice came out a little jealous. “Watson gave you those?”
