Cameron left, his steps heavy, like every stride cost him something.
Greta’s tears spilled over in an instant, pain crashing through her as if she’d been shot—raw, blinding, and uncontrollable. Suddenly frantic, she ran after him, grabbing Cameron from behind, clinging to him with everything she had, pride forgotten. Her voice trembled as she begged, “Cameron, I don’t want to be apart from you.”
“You don’t understand,” she choked out. “Since you left, I haven’t had a single happy day. It took me so long to find you again. I’m not letting you go.”
Cameron froze mid-stride, caught off guard. For a moment, he just stood there, motionless. Then his phone rang—Nina’s ringtone, their daughter’s name flashing on the screen. The spell broke. He shook Greta off, rough and abrupt.
Her weak body went flying, crashing hard against the floor. Her head hit the wall with a sickening thud.
She let out a strangled cry.
Cameron looked down at her, noticing blood oozing from between her fingers. Greta’s wounded, pleading eyes only made his frustration flare.
He walked over, slow and stiff, and reached out to pull her up.
Greta, still crying, looked up at him through tear-blurred eyes. “If you’re set on leaving, then go. But Cameron, if you walk out now, we’re done. For good.”
Cameron glanced at the blood on her forehead. “Get that checked at the hospital,” he said, then turned and left without looking back.
Greta broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.
Cameron could hear her cries as he walked away, his brows knitting in frustration, regret twisting inside him.
Still, he didn’t turn around. Nina’s ringtone kept playing, her daughter’s voice pulling him home.
