Right now, Mayo's face was burning with shame.
How proud must a person feel, he thought, to have someone truly trust them? Yet he, Mayo, had squandered away every ounce of trust Winona once had in him—carelessly, thoughtlessly.
He doubted he'd ever regain even a fraction of it for the rest of his life.
"Tiana, I... I'm sorry, Mr. Mayo…" He struggled for words, his voice rough. "Your mother... she doesn't trust me either. She never will."
Tiana looked up at him, her eyes glistening. "Did you lie to my mom, too?"
Mayo was silent.
Tiana seemed to have expected that answer. She dropped her gaze, tears rolling down her cheeks, but she held herself together, barely making a sound. "My mom's so pitiful. Everyone lies to her, everyone bullies her. And then they turn around and say it's her own fault, but she's never done anything to you. Why do you all keep lying to her? Why is everyone so cruel to her?"
She sniffed, her voice trembling with self-reproach. "It's my fault, too. I used to lie to her, I used to treat her badly. I'm her daughter. If even I treat her that way, why wouldn't everyone else? It's all my fault."
Watching this, Mayo—who'd never married, never had children—felt a sharp ache in his chest.
He crouched down beside Tiana, speaking gently. "Don't cry, Tiana. You can make it right. You're her closest family. From now on, just be good to your mom—don't lie to her, don't hurt her. She'll forgive you, I promise. You're her daughter—she loves you more than anyone in the world."
Tiana nodded, wiping her eyes. "Okay."
After Tiana calmed down, Mayo and Claud finally turned their attention to Julian, sprawled on the couch and dead drunk.
"Julian, are you feeling all right? Do you need us to take you to the hospital?" Mayo asked.
