Though Helga couldn't run as fast as Mia, her voice was even more heart-wrenching as she wailed, "No, no, no, my dear, don't worry about the three of us—go save Nona first! My poor Nona…"
Zane's small hand was held tightly between Mia and the old woman as they hurried along.
Of all of them, Zane sobbed the most pitifully.
He wasn't quite as dramatic as his great-grandmother and Aunt Mia, but he was certainly faster—his little legs carrying him straight to Yves Prescott in a blink.
"Daddy Prescott…" he whimpered, clinging to Yves. "I don't want to call my real dad ‘Dad' anymore. I want to call you ‘Dad.' Is that okay? I'm scared of my father. He took my mom away, made her work as a maid, and she's so sad. Please, please help my mom…"
Zane was already wrapped around Yves's neck, his face buried in Yves's shoulder.
Mia and Helga crowded in behind Yves, too.
To the three of them, Yves Prescott was their shield—the only one who could keep them safe.
"My dear, there are three of them… Are you scared?" Helga whispered, hiding behind Yves and clutching his coat.
"Not at all," Yves replied easily, glancing back at her.
Zane peeked over Yves's shoulder, eyeing Julian nervously.
At that moment, Julian's heart twisted painfully, as if someone was dragging a dull knife through it—or maybe it felt more like being trampled by a mule.
His own son refused to call him "Dad," instead clinging to his greatest rival as though they were father and son.
Julian was certain his heart was bleeding right now.
Yves's gaze was cold and sharp as he fixed his eyes on Julian. "Mr. Nicholson, what are you doing here? How did you find this place? Are you here to intimidate three defenseless women and children?"
As he spoke, Yves bent down and murmured something in Zane's ear.
