Helga and Mia offered Julian and Tiana an awkward smile before obediently following Winona out.
"Mommy!" Tiana cried out from behind them.
Winona didn't turn back.
Her voice, when she spoke, was a desolate, distant, and sorrowful whisper. "Tiana, I'm not your mommy. Felicity is. You and she are the ones who will be together for the rest of your lives. You need to be a good girl and get along with her, do you understand?"
Even without looking back, the worry was plain in her voice. She was terrified that Tiana and Felicity would never find peace with each other.
Even Sue, the housekeeper, could hear the painful sincerity in Winona's words. She watched Winona lead Zane, Helga, and Mia out of the grand hall before letting out a heavy sigh.
"To be honest, sir," she began, "if my lady had asked for custody of the princess from the start, would you have given it to her? Of course not. She's your only daughter. Winona is just one woman, with no power or influence. She must have thought it through. Since she could never win custody, and since her daughter wasn't close to her anyway, the only thing she could do to protect her was to completely let her go, to cut her out from her heart."
"That's what she's done now. She has completely given up on the princess. It's like she carved out a piece of her own flesh, and over time, the wound has scarred over. How can you ask her to look back now?"
A woman always understands another woman. Once you've truly let something go from your heart, it's nearly impossible to get it back.
Julian nodded, his shoulders slumping in defeat.
He pulled out his phone and called his driver. "Find my wife the best suite in the best hotel nearest to the Nicholson estate. And hire extra security to protect them. Make sure no bloggers or paparazzi get anywhere near them!"
"Right away, Mr. Nicholson!" the voice on the other end replied.
"And hotel food is terrible. Arrange for meals from a nearby restaurant!"
"Understood, Mr. Nicholson!"
"Wait. Tell the restaurant, no pre-made meals. Everything has to be made with fresh ingredients!"
"Yes, Mr. Nicholson!"
"Hold on a second. Winona… she can't eat lamb. I remember she can't stand the smell. Make sure they don't order any lamb. Seafood… she loves fish and shrimp. Find the best seafood place in the area."
