There was a time when all Winona wanted was for the three of them to sit down for a meal together, just once. But Julian had never given her that chance. Not for her birthday. Not even for their wedding anniversary. And certainly not for his or Tiana's birthdays.
Now, on the verge of a lawsuit and divorce, they were finally sitting together. The irony was suffocating.
None of them had an appetite.
"Mommy," Tiana whispered, her voice small and timid.
Winona pressed her lips together. "Tiana, could you go play in the kids' area over there for a little while?"
Tiana nodded obediently. "Okay." She walked away, glancing back over her shoulder every few steps.
"Julian, the child is innocent," Winona began, her voice low and steady. "You've already drilled into her head how wonderful Felicity is, and you've successfully pushed her away from me. I don't blame you for that, and I don't blame her."
"But I don't understand what you're doing now. Why are you forcing her to be near me? It goes against everything you wanted. She's just a little girl; she can't handle this constant reversal. She really will grow up with psychological scars, don't you understand that? She is your daughter!"
"You're worried about her, aren't you?" Julian asked softly.
Winona let out a bitter laugh. "Was there ever a time you thought I wasn't?"
Julian fell silent.
"When I cared for her, I valued her more than my own life. The only reason I stopped was because I couldn't fight you and Felicity's influence over her anymore. I gave up because I was powerless!" she said, her voice trembling slightly. "But I never, ever stopped loving her! And I would certainly never use her!"
