THE DIVORCE GAMBIT From Dumped Wife to CEO's Forever novel Chapter 11

Gordon was a firm believer in staying single.

Over the years, he'd never dated, never even had a fleeting crush; the person he loved most in the world was, unquestionably, himself.

There was no way he'd let some unrelated outsider waltz in and lay claim to his fortune—the business empire he'd built from the ground up with his own two hands.

What was his would always be his. No exceptions.

Skyler looked up at Gordon. "Uncle, you sound so sure of yourself. Just because you haven't met someone you like now doesn't mean you never will. What if you fall for someone in the future? Wouldn't that make you eat your words?"

"Eat my words?" Gordon's lips curled in a dismissive smirk. "Only the weak worry about that sort of thing. My loyalty is to myself, always."

Ding!

The elevator doors slid open at the VIP floor. Gordon strode out, but as he moved, a wave of discomfort tightened in his chest. He raised a fist to his lips and stifled a quiet cough.

Remembering something, Gordon pulled a prescription slip from his pocket and handed it to Skyler. "Send this to Assistant Winslow. Have him arrange for the pharmacy to prepare it every day and bring it up to me."

Skyler's eyes widened. "Uncle, are you seriously going to take some mystery medicine? That woman sounded like she was just trying to scare you. She's so young—she probably hasn't even finished her certification, let alone mastered any real medical skills! What if she's working for your rivals and trying to poison you?"

Skyler paused, then added, "How about this—I'll find you a reputable traditional medicine practitioner to check you over. If your symptoms are really that bad, you can take the medicine then. No harm in being careful."

You could never be too wary.

Given Gordon's position, he had more than a few enemies. Some would do anything to bring him down, and who knew if Caitlin was a spy sent by the competition?

Soon, the pair reached the private VIP suite.

"It's your uncle who really worries me," Beatrice said, glancing at Gordon.

"What did I do?" Gordon protested, blindsided.

"Look at you—all grown up, and you've never even held a girl's hand. Aren't you embarrassed?"

All grown up?

He wasn't even twenty-nine yet, and his mother made him sound like he was ancient.

Gordon rubbed his temples. "Mom, I've told you, I'm not the marrying type."

"Nonsense!" Beatrice cut him off, pointing an accusatory finger. "Who doesn't get married? When your father was alive, his biggest hope was to see you and your sister happy with families of your own. Now Skyler's about to get married, your sister's about to become a grandmother, and you're still alone. Tell me, how can I possibly not worry about you?"
