Nothing?
Nothing at all!
Skyler was genuinely stunned.
"Uncle Gordon, didn't I remind you? The 8th is Boss Caitlin's birthday. How could you show up empty-handed?" Skyler let out a heavy sigh. "You could've brought back the tiniest gift, and it would still show you care."
It's the thought that counts!
Why didn't his uncle understand something so simple?
What's money, compared to Caitlin?
"I told you, I don't spend money on people I'm not related to by blood." Gordon replied slowly, his face as cold and unreadable as ever.
Skyler could only shake his head in resignation. "Alright, alright. There's no point trying to explain this to you. Just don't regret it later, okay?"
There was really no use arguing with someone so stubborn.
No matter how hard Skyler tried, he knew Gordon wouldn't budge.
Meanwhile, Nick and David had taken an earlier flight and were already waiting for Gordon and Skyler at the airport with their luggage.
Skyler hurried over to them.
"Uncle Gordon, which one's my bag?"
"That one," Gordon said, gesturing toward a suitcase.
"Oh." Skyler nodded, then eyed the two other large bags with curiosity. "So, what's in those?"
But before Gordon could answer, Skyler's expression lit up with excitement as if he'd cracked a code. "Wait, I get it! Those are gifts for me, aren't they? Uncle Gordon, thank you! Thank you so much—you're the best, you've made my whole year!"
He even broke into song as he finished.
"Let's see what surprises you've brought me this time!"
What could possibly be in there that even he wasn't allowed to see?
"Uncle Gordon, what did you buy?" Skyler pressed on.
"That's not for you to know."
Skyler was frustrated but knew there was nothing he could do.
If it were anyone else, he might have tried to sneak a peek. But this was Gordon—Master Ninth himself. Even as his nephew, Skyler didn't have the guts to go rummaging through his uncle's stuff.
As they made their way to the parking garage, Skyler slowed his pace to walk alongside Nick, lowering his voice. "Nick, do you know what's in Uncle Gordon's luggage?"
Of course, Nick knew. But as Gordon's assistant, he also knew exactly what he could and couldn't say.
So, when Skyler asked, Nick just shook his head. "No idea."
Skyler dropped his voice even lower. "Nick, just tell me and I'll make it worth your while."
