He made the gesture for a hundred thousand.
Nick kept shaking his head. "Mr. Cumming, please, don't make this hard for me. I honestly have no idea."
Skyler turned to David.
Sensing Skyler's gaze, David immediately took a step back. "Mr. Cumming, I don't know either."
Skyler could only stare.
Unbelievable!
His uncle's staff—why were they all this loyal?
Not even money could loosen their lips.
Soon, they arrived at the gleaming Rolls-Royce.
Gordon hadn't slept well during this business trip, so as soon as he got in the car, he leaned back and closed his eyes for a nap.
Skyler had a million questions ready to go.
But it was as if Gordon could read his mind; before Skyler could say a word, Gordon spoke. "Zip it. Don't bother me, I'm trying to sleep."
Skyler was left speechless.
His uncle, the king of cool detachment. And him, utterly pitiful.
Forty minutes later, the car pulled into Sylvester Gardens.
The chauffeur hopped out and opened the door. Gordon was the first to get out. He was a stickler for cleanliness—after any trip, his top priority was always a shower. He wouldn't meet anyone until he'd scrubbed off the road.
Skyler, on the other hand, didn't have that particular quirk. He headed straight for the main house, peeling off in the opposite direction from Gordon.
There were guests at Sylvester Gardens today.
Beatrice's niece from her side of the family had come over with her three-year-old son.
Little kids love marbles.
Skyler had barely set foot in the hallway when his shoe landed squarely on a stray marble.
He was moving fast, too.
His foot skidded.
Thud.
"Ow!"
Alaina came out just then. "What happened to Skyler?"
Beatrice glanced at her daughter. "Nothing. He's just sleeping on the floor."
That did it. Skyler burst out laughing in disbelief, then scrambled up, protesting, "I wasn't sleeping! I slipped and fell, Grandma! I nearly broke my neck, and you two think I'm napping…"
He couldn't have felt more wronged.
His uncle had survived this house all these years—he must have a charmed life.
Skyler was only two years younger than Gordon.
He remembered when Gordon was a kid and almost drowned during a swimming lesson. Beatrice just stood on the side and praised Gordon's technique.
Luckily, the swimming coach noticed in time!
"I've never seen anyone about to die from a fall look so lively," Alaina remarked, patting the dust off her son's back. "Go on inside, your cousin's here."
"So that's why there were marbles all over the floor. Had to be Max's doing, right?" Skyler grumbled as he headed into the house.
Beatrice's niece was named Reba Sinclair.
Max was her three-year-old son.
