Most importantly, these days, the moment Gordon gets in the car, he immediately puts on a musical. Not only does he listen, but sometimes he even hums along with the songs.
The more Skyler thought about it, the more moved he felt.
Sure, it might seem like a small thing to anyone else, but knowing how stubborn and set in his ways his uncle could be, this was nothing short of a miracle.
To Gordon, Skyler must be the most important person in the world.
No one could ever take his place!
Ike let out a long sigh. “You’re so full of yourself. What if Master Ninth isn’t listening to musicals because of you?”
Skyler snorted. “Then who else would it be for? You?”
Ike narrowed his eyes. “What if it’s because of his first love? Maybe she likes musicals, and he’s just picking up the habit for her sake. I’m telling you, when a man’s in love, he’ll bend over backwards for the one he cares about.”
As far as Ike was concerned, all of Gordon’s recent behavior was classic lovesick guy.
Skyler just laughed even harder. “Ha! Ike, with an imagination like yours, you really missed your calling as a novelist. Must be hard for you, stuck in the business world! I’ve told you a million times—my uncle is a lifelong bachelor. Do you have any idea what that means? No way would a guy like him suddenly start listening to musicals just because of some woman.”
Ike squinted at him, then turned, his voice analytical. “Or maybe Master Ninth is just the silent type—you know, the kind who talks tough but is secretly soft inside. He might claim he’ll never marry, but for all you know, he’s already got someone in mind and just hasn’t told you yet.”
Ike’s logic sounded convincing, but to Skyler, it was complete nonsense.
“Chasing a girl? That’s even less likely! I’ve never once seen my uncle pursue anyone.”
Caitlin was gorgeous, after all.
But even when it came to Caitlin Kensington, Gordon had always been completely unfazed, not the slightest hint of interest.
A man who can’t be bothered to even give a girl a birthday gift—how could he ever swallow his pride to chase after one?
Impossible.
Absolutely impossible.
Ike pressed on. “Just because he never has, doesn’t mean he never will. I know what I saw, and I’m telling you—that was Master Ninth!”
“I’d sooner believe that was my dad than my uncle. Ike, you really should get your eyes checked.”
Meanwhile, in his office, Justice Cumming suddenly sneezed out of nowhere.
“Achoo!”
He pinched his nose, puzzled. “Is someone thinking about me?”
Could it be Alaina Sylvester?
At that thought, Justice immediately pulled out his phone and dialed. “Hey, Alaina—”
Back with Skyler and Ike, Ike was getting more and more annoyed at being told to see an eye doctor. Suddenly, as if struck by inspiration, he turned to Skyler. “Skyler, want to make a bet?”
The crisp, fresh lettuce balanced the richness of the grilled beef perfectly—each bite started with a refreshing crunch, followed by the smoky, peppery flavor of the meat. The combination was unexpectedly delicious.
Gordon’s eyes lit up in genuine surprise. “Catie, how do you even come up with this stuff?”
Caitlin grinned. “Of course! Life’s too short to miss out on great food. And don’t even get me started on all the hidden gems I know about!”
“Hidden gems?” Gordon echoed, uncertain he’d heard her right.
“Yeah, you know—those little hole-in-the-wall places? Haven’t you ever been to one?” Caitlin asked, curious.
Gordon nodded quickly. “Oh, sure, I’ve been. Just never found any that were especially great.”
“Next time, I’ll take you to one of my favorites,” Caitlin promised.
“I’d like that,” Gordon replied, a smile tugging at his lips.
The two of them chatted and snacked their way past midnight, completely losing track of time.
Caitlin’s phone buzzed with several WhatsApp messages from Fortune Kensington.
Gordon offered to give her a lift—first on his bike, to the parking lot where her car was, then driving her home.
As fate would have it, on their way to the parking lot, Ike happened to spot them from his car. He let out a piercing shriek. “Holy—! Skyler! That’s Master Ninth! I swear, he’s riding a bike with a girl on the back—he’s actually on a date!”
