Right now, all eyes were fixed on Caitlin.
Everyone was waiting for her answer, their faces full of hope and anticipation.
Everyone except Zane.
Because Zane already knew the answer in his heart.
Gordon's condition was dire—so dire that unless a miracle happened, there was no way anyone could bring him back.
So really, there was only one ending waiting for Gordon.
Death.
Poor Beatrice was about to face the heartbreak of outliving her own son.
Just then, Caitlin spoke softly. "Mr. Sylvester is out of danger."
Out of danger?
Gordon was all right?
He really was all right!
Alaina stared at her for a split second, stunned, before the words sank in. Then she whirled around to Justice, tears of relief streaming down her face. "Justice! Did you hear that? Miss Kensington said Gordon's going to be okay!"
Justice squeezed Alaina's hand, still trying to process it, barely daring to believe her brother-in-law had really survived.
Skyler, unable to contain herself, leapt into the air right where she stood.
"Oh my God! Miss Kensington, you're amazing! You're a miracle worker! You're my hero!"
Zane's brow furrowed deeper.
Impossible.
Absolutely impossible.
He was Gordon's attending physician. He knew how bad the injuries were.
Gordon's lungs were severely damaged. Not even if Hippocrates himself came back to life could he have recovered this fast!
It had to be a lie.
Caitlin was bluffing.
With that thought, Zane narrowed his eyes, forcing a smile. "Congratulations, Miss Kensington. You truly are a medical marvel. Since Mr. Sylvester is doing so well, could we perhaps go in and see him now?"
He wanted to expose Caitlin as a fraud in front of everyone.
Alaina turned to Caitlin as well, her voice trembling with hope. "Yes, Miss Kensington, can I see my brother now?"
Zane's lips curled in anticipation.
"Mr. Cumming, please don't worry." Caitlin remained unruffled. She took a small porcelain vial from her medical kit, pulled out the stopper, and held it beneath Gordon's nose.
Zane snorted.
What a charade.
Did she really think there was some magic potion in there? That just a sniff would wake him up?
But in the very next instant, Gordon's eyes fluttered open.
"Gordon!" Alaina cried, overcome with emotion. "Gordon, you're awake!"
Justice and Skyler both stared in shock.
"Gordon!"
"Uncle!"
"Alaina. Justice." Gordon's voice was a little weak, but carried its familiar, commanding steadiness.
Tears of joy streamed down Alaina's cheeks. "Gordon, how do you feel? Are you still in pain?"
"I feel so much better. You don't need to worry." Gordon wasn't just putting on a brave face for his sister—he really did feel as though a crushing weight had been lifted from his chest.
Alaina wiped her eyes, then turned gratefully to Caitlin. "It's all thanks to Miss Kensington. If it weren't for her, you—"
