Gordon’s WhatsApp message popped up just then: “Catie, I don’t make a habit of taking money from women.”
On PayPal, once you block someone’s account, they can’t transfer money to you anymore.
Gordon had blocked Caitlin, guessing she’d try to send the money back.
“I gave it to you willingly,” he wrote, “so you don’t need to feel guilty.”
Caitlin thought for a moment, then typed back, “Then I’ll bring you a gift when I get back.”
She’d been glued to her phone, chatting with Gordon since she sat down, completely oblivious to the man next to her.
He wore a gray hoodie, his features sharp and refined, a pair of gold-rimmed glasses perched on his nose. Everything about him radiated a gentle intellect, like a university professor stepping out of a campus quad.
This was Jimmy.
To be honest, when Caitlin first sat down, Jimmy hadn’t noticed her either.
Until—
He caught a whiff of something pleasant—a faint, clean fragrance reminiscent of a bamboo grove after rain, tinged with the crispness of winter berries. In an instant, Jimmy was transported back to those carefree childhood days at his grandmother’s house.
Those days were gone, never to return.
He turned his head and saw Caitlin’s profile.
Her hair was swept up in a simple bun, revealing a smooth forehead and a graceful, swanlike neck. She wore a pale pink dress that made her skin look porcelain, and held her phone, smiling at whatever message she was reading.
Jimmy paused, surprised to see the famously adored Miss Gonzales sitting in economy class.
Or maybe…
Did she know he was on this flight?
Had she chosen this seat on purpose?
After all, Caitlin and Cassidy were close, and Cassidy had made it no secret that she wanted something to happen between him and Caitlin.
He’d just told Cassidy last night that he was flying to Neon Spire today.
And now, Caitlin was right here beside him.
It was almost too much of a coincidence.
What made Jimmy even more suspicious was that, although he’d already noticed Caitlin, she didn’t seem to have noticed him at all.
It was hard not to suspect she was doing it deliberately—trying to catch his attention.
Jimmy was no stranger to women’s games; he’d dated before, held positions of authority, and knew that when a woman set her mind to something, most men didn’t stand a chance. Ten years ago, he might have been hopelessly drawn to a girl like Caitlin.
But that was a decade ago.
He was no longer a boy dreaming of romance.
A slight smile played at Jimmy’s lips as he picked up his newspaper, deciding not to greet Caitlin just yet. He was curious to see how long she’d keep up the act.
Based on his experience, he figured it wouldn’t take more than ten minutes for Caitlin to feign surprise and say, “Wow, what a coincidence, Mr. Parsons! I didn’t expect to see you on this flight.”
