Blood?
The moment Skyler heard that word, he tensed up, cutting Gordon off mid-sentence. "Blood? Are you sure? How much?"
"Not much. Just a little," Gordon replied.
Skyler immediately pulled out his phone. "I'll message Doctor Kensington on WhatsApp and ask if this is normal."
"Doctor Kensington?" Gordon looked puzzled.
Skyler explained, "You know, Doctor Kensington—Miss Kensington!"
"You have her on WhatsApp?" Gordon asked, raising an eyebrow.
By "her," he obviously meant Caitlin.
"Yeah, I do." Skyler nodded.
Gordon's gaze swept over Skyler, cool and indifferent. "When did you add her on WhatsApp?"
"Oh, that night I gave Doctor Caitlin a ride home," Skyler said. But as soon as the words left his mouth, he felt an odd chill creep up the back of his neck, as if someone had pressed a slab of ice there. He instinctively reached up to rub the spot.
Weird. There was nothing there.
At the same time, Gordon picked up a pair of scissors from his desk and, with a crisp snip, cut off the overgrown stem from the potted fern by the window.
Snap.
The tender green stem dropped onto the desk.
Watching this, Skyler felt the unsettling chill intensify. It was almost as if his uncle was sizing him up like prey.
Come on, adding Caitlin on WhatsApp—was that really some unforgivable crime?
Before he could say anything else, Gordon asked, "Are you two close?"
The words were soft, but there was a cold edge to them, like frost laced through the air.
Skyler barely had time to answer before Gordon continued, his tone icier than ever. "You and her—whether it's intelligence, skill, or knowledge, there's a gap between you that you'll never cross. Give yourself ten more years and you still couldn't catch up, let alone stand beside her."
"Catch up? I'm not trying to date Doctor Caitlin!" Skyler protested, looking completely bewildered. "She's my role model, not my girlfriend. I'll chase after my idol for ten, twenty, thirty years if I have to—she'll always be my inspiration!"
By the end, his eyes practically sparkled with admiration.
"Oh, okay, just checking. For a second I thought you wanted Doctor Caitlin's WhatsApp too!"
Skyler was about to go on when a new message popped up on his phone. Caitlin had replied.
Reading her explanation, Skyler finally relaxed and handed the phone to Gordon. "See, Uncle? Doctor Caitlin says it's normal. Your lungs are healing, so a bit of blood is just your body clearing out toxins. As long as you keep taking your medicine, you'll be fine."
"Alright," Gordon nodded, then asked, "By the way, how's that other matter going?"
Other matter?
"What do you mean?" Skyler blinked, caught off guard.
"Who's really backing Julian?" Gordon clarified.
Skyler gave an exasperated smile. "Uncle, you're still hung up on that? I'm telling you, there's no mysterious mastermind. The Chandler Group is all Julian."
"I looked into it from every angle, and the only person I could connect to Julian was his ex-wife, Caitlin. During that time, she was the only one besides him who had free access to his office."
"But there's just no way she's the one pulling the strings! She's just a small-town girl, no big connections. It has to be Julian himself."
Worried that Gordon might confuse Julian's ex-wife Caitlin with the Doctor Caitlin who treated him, Skyler made sure to clarify, "Uncle, don't get the wrong idea. Julian's ex, Caitlin, is not the same person as Doctor Caitlin who saved your life!"
