She knew it. That country bumpkin Caitlin didn't have such incredible medical skills.
Amanda smoothed the triumph from her face, replacing it with a look of deep concern. She rushed into the room, crying, "Stuart! Stuart, you're finally awake! Sister has waited so long for this day!"
"Do you know how much I've missed you all these years?"
"I prayed every single day for you to wake up."
Her sobs grew more intense until her voice was raw, the very picture of a devoted sister. Then, she turned to Ann. "Ann! Go and close the door!"
Stuart was, after all, the head of the Gonzales family. No one outside could see him in this crazed state.
"Yes, Mom."
Ann nodded, dismissed the maids from the room, and shut all the doors before returning.
Hearing Amanda's voice, Stuart turned his head. His eyes were bloodshot, and the fragmented memories in his mind seemed to snap into focus all at once. He clutched his head and screamed, "Aaargh!"
Amanda was startled, not by the scream, but by the look in his eyes. For a split second, they were piercingly clear, like swords that could cut through any pretense and see straight into her soul.
But her fear quickly subsided. Stuart was a dying man. What was there to be afraid of?
In this life, Stuart was nothing more than a stepping stone for her. His daughter would be a stepping stone for Ann. Soon, the Gonzales family would have a new name.
Like a snake in the shadows, Amanda hid her venomous thoughts and continued to play the part of the loving sister. She went to the bed and hugged Stuart, her voice thick with tears. "Stuart, Stuart, what's wrong? Are you in pain? Tell your sister, please."
"If I could, I would take this pain for you. I've blamed myself all these years, wondering why it wasn't me in that car crash."
Keira looked at Amanda, her eyes filled with gratitude. Thank God. Thank God she had always trusted her daughter. And her daughter had not disappointed her. It was clear now that Amanda was not the one who had harmed her son.
As Amanda held him, Stuart's eyes suddenly rolled back, and he collapsed, unconscious.
"Stuart! Stuart, are you alright? Open your eyes and look at me!" Amanda cried in a panic.
"Stuart!"
She turned to Caitlin. "Freya! What happened to your father? Come and see!"
Caitlin calmly took out a golden needle and inserted it into an acupuncture point on Stuart's shoulder, a point known for detoxification.
The moment the needle went in, it began to turn black.
"F-Freya," Amanda stammered, "I thought your father was fine. Why did he pass out again?"
"Because he was poisoned," Caitlin said, her voice cold. "The reason he was in a coma for twenty years wasn't the car crash. It was because someone added an extra ingredient to his medicine."
