"What are you even talking about?" Dalton said, exasperated. "I'm just waiting for Caitlin's call."
Caitlin?
His mother paused, looking uncertain. "Caitlin… You mean that country girl Jarvis picked out for Julian to marry?"
Dalton nodded. "Yeah, that's her."
His mother frowned in confusion. "Why are you waiting for her call? Didn't Julian already divorce her?"
She never liked Caitlin. If it weren't for the late Jarvis's old-fashioned beliefs, a girl from some backwater village would never have become Mrs. Chandler. And for someone like Caitlin to catch Jarvis's eye, she must have used every trick in the book. Dalton's mother had no patience for schemers like her.
Dalton shoveled down a mouthful of food. "It's business, Mom. Don't ask so many questions. I'm done, heading upstairs."
Watching her son's retreating back, she scowled. "What business could he possibly have with her? What does a country girl know about anything, anyway?"
Upstairs, Dalton kept his eyes glued to his phone. But the screen stayed stubbornly blank.
He glanced at the clock. It was 7:30 PM.
Just wait a little longer.
By eight or nine, Caitlin would definitely call.
With that thought, Dalton grabbed some clothes and headed for a shower, deliberately leaving his phone behind. If Caitlin called and he didn't pick up, it'd drive her crazy. Let her stew for a bit.
Half an hour later, the first thing Dalton did when he came out was check his phone. He didn't even need to look—he was sure Caitlin had called a dozen times by now. She must be frantic.
He grinned to himself—until he saw the screen.
Nothing. Not a single missed call.
What the hell?
Caitlin hadn't called him at all.
He hurriedly opened WhatsApp. Still nothing—no new messages, not even a friend request.
Just wait. She'll reach out soon, he told himself.
The Chandler Group was about to close a deal with Sylvester Group. He had a new game launch coming up, The Celestial Awards to prepare for, and a pile of other work demanding his attention—he couldn't afford to obsess over Caitlin all night.
Another three hours ticked by. Dalton finished his work and checked his phone again—still no word from Caitlin.
"No, it's not that," Dalton replied quickly. "Caitlin never contacted me at all last night! Julian, what do you think is going on?"
"She didn't?" Julian frowned. "Is your phone broken?"
Caitlin had always been obsessed with him—she'd even tried to hurt herself after losing him. There was no way she'd go an entire night without contacting Dalton. It had to be a technical issue.
"My phone's fine," Dalton said, starting to doubt himself. "I've been getting messages from everyone else. There's no way I'd miss something from Caitlin."
Storm clouds gathered on Julian's face. He was about to say something when—
Knock, knock, knock—
Someone was at the door.
It had to be Caitlin!
Julian's eyes lit up as he glanced at the door. He stood, unable to hide his excitement. "It's Caitlin! She's here in person, probably brought the Apex acquisition files and is ready to beg me to take her back!"
Dalton quickly grabbed Julian's arm before he could open the door. "Julian, promise me you won't forgive her just because of those documents. Make sure she understands what she did wrong."
