Manager Barrett's words were utterly decisive.
After all, not long ago, Fortune had tried to pull some strings through him, hoping he could help Caitlin get into Central Academy.
If Caitlin truly had the talent, Fortune wouldn't have needed to ask for favors in the first place.
Besides, the two leaders from Central Academy had come specifically looking for a Caitlin who lived in Building 5.
If Barrett remembered correctly, Fortune lived in Building 2.
The old man really had some nerve.
Did he honestly believe his granddaughter was such a prodigy?
When Fortune first heard Caitlin's name mentioned by his coworkers, he'd felt a surge of excitement. But Ray Barrett's blunt words poured over him like a bucket of ice water.
Fortune shot Barrett a look. "Manager Barrett, I won't deny there could be someone else with the same name, but my granddaughter's grades are outstanding. Are you really saying she couldn't get into Central Academy? You serious about that? If my granddaughter gets accepted into Central Academy, you'll eat your words—and more!"
Barrett nodded coolly. "Sure, but only if she actually gets in."
"Alright, Manager Barrett. I'll remember what you said."
Barrett couldn't be bothered to argue further. He caught up with the two school officials. "Principal Blake, Director Prescott, if you'll follow me this way."
As Barrett and the school leaders left, their coworkers gathered around Fortune, trying to comfort him.
"Don't let it get to you, Fortune. That's just how Manager Barrett is—his mouth always gets ahead of him."
Fortune just gave a dismissive laugh. "No worries. The truth speaks for itself. I know my granddaughter can do it."
His coworker glanced at him, an odd, almost pitying look on her face.
Everyone thought Fortune was being far too optimistic.
Barrett's words may have been harsh, but there was some truth to them.
After all, Caitlin had taken a year off from school. Getting into Central Academy now was next to impossible.
Meanwhile, Barrett had already led Principal Blake and Director Prescott to the Kensington family's door. He put on his most courteous tone. "Principal Blake, Director Prescott, let me knock."
He rapped gently on the door.
It opened quickly.
She was clearly nothing like the "model student" they'd pictured.
Principal Blake spoke up at once. "Hello, Caitlin. I'm Lanny Blake, the principal at Central Academy. Congratulations—you've passed our transfer exam with flying colors and ranked first overall. This is our Director, Mr. Prescott. We're here to invite you to the school and help you with your enrollment paperwork."
Caitlin's expression barely changed when she heard she'd come in first place.
It was exactly what she'd expected.
"Good afternoon, Principal Blake, Director Prescott," she said politely. "Are we handling the paperwork now?"
"Yes, if you're free," Principal Blake replied. "If it's not convenient, we can wait here for you, or have someone bring the papers over for you to sign."
They couldn't risk anything going wrong. She was their top scorer, after all. If word got out, other schools might try to poach her.
"That's fine," Caitlin replied. "I just need to let my grandfather know."
She dialed her grandfather as she walked with the three of them toward the elevator.
The call didn't go through, but as soon as they stepped outside the building, Caitlin spotted Fortune and his coworkers heading their way.
