The Double or more Life of the Fake Heiress (Mirabella) novel Chapter 1758

Mirabella kept her cool as she retraced her steps back to the room. She pulled her phone out of her bag, not surprised at all to find there was no signal. Everything seemed perfectly orchestrated against her. She pursed her lips a bit, not showing even a hint of panic. Her gown was damp and sticky, so she nonchalantly grabbed a napkin from nearby and started wiping it off with a casual air.

Downstairs, things were anything but quiet. In the side hall, Murray was deep in conversation with James about weapons when, out of nowhere, a bullet sliced through the air, smashing through the floor-to-ceiling glass window, aimed directly at James who was seated sideways.

The whole thing happened in a heartbeat, but Murray was quick to catch on to the danger. His face changed in an instant, and without hesitating, he shoved James out of harm’s way. “Look out!” he yelled.

But as Murray pushed James aside, the bullet found its mark in Murray’s body instead. He coughed up a mouthful of blood and hit the floor hard.

James, having been shoved aside, quickly rolled away to safety, frowning as he looked towards the bullet's origin. The small hole in the glass door suggested the shot came from the mansion's back hill. From the sniper's vantage point, had he not moved, it would've been a deadly hit. The target was obvious—James.

James quickly turned his attention to Murray, who had taken the bullet meant for him. An unfamiliar emotion flickered in his eyes.

Just then, the partition door burst open, and five or six of the Earl's guards came rushing in. Their faces fell when they saw Murray on the floor. “Quick, get a doctor, the Earl's been hit hard…” one of the guards called out.

One guard, not daring to move Murray, carefully applied pressure to his wound, expertly working to stop the bleeding. The others sprang into action, searching for the shooter and triggering the alarm, determined to catch whoever was behind this.

Even though Murray had been shot, he was still conscious. He swallowed the metallic taste of blood in his throat and strained to look over at James. “James, you okay?” he asked.
