The real challenge with a moving target is its speed and the need to predict its path and range just as you pull the trigger. Even the tiniest mistake can throw everything off. And with a new pistol, you're not getting the same performance as with the more advanced models. That’s why the head elder was so sure that Mirabella would lose to Penelope. Anyone would have thought the same.
But Mirabella was brimming with confidence, handling her gun with more ease than Penelope had earlier. Each shot she took seemed to come alive, slicing through the air with one goal in mind—to hit dead center. In less than a minute, the sound of six successful hits echoed continuously. Besides that announcement, the shooting range was eerily silent, the atmosphere almost chilling.
Penelope watched the results, her confident expression slipping, her hand clenched tightly by her side. Hitting a full-speed moving target with every shot is something you might not achieve even after a decade of practice. Lowering her eyes, Penelope felt her pride and talent shrink away. With a wry smile, she turned and left. Everyone's eyes were glued to Mirabella, so Penelope's exit was like a feather drifting unnoticed into water.
"Mr. Nick, didn’t you say Miss Mira just took some basic shooting class in college?" Reid asked, his face a mix of awe and confusion. Could someone really get this good from just a college course? Perfectly hitting a moving target? Reid was practically exploding with questions and disbelief.
Nick, equally bewildered, decided to play deaf. What could he say? Admit his sister had been pulling the wool over everyone's eyes with her incredible skills? Or that he, as her brother, was just as clueless? No matter how he looked at it, Nick couldn’t find any humor in the situation. No wonder she bragged about her talent earlier; she really was that gifted.
Unaware of her brother's dilemma, Mirabella casually tossed her gun back on the table and stepped off the shooting platform. When she met her brother’s intense gaze, she thought, "Oops, maybe I overdid it."
She flashed him a big smile, trying to smooth things over, "Nick, let me explain..."
"You mean, make excuses," Nick shot back with a knowing laugh.
