Santos was a bit taken aback, not expecting King to suddenly bring up the key. But he quickly regained his composure and straightened up a bit. “I’ve got a few leads. Just need a little more time.”
King frowned, clearly not impressed with Santos’s answer. “You’re dragging your feet.”
Santos dropped his gaze, making it hard to read his expression. “I’ll get the key as soon as I can.”
King gave him another look. “Only the Stevenson family knows how to open that interdimensional portal. It’s been ages; don’t let me down.”
“I get it,” Santos replied, keeping his voice low.
King decided to leave it at that, shifting his attention elsewhere. “I’ve got some things to sort out, so I might not be around the base for a bit.”
Everyone else in the room was used to King’s occasional disappearances, so they just nodded it off without any fuss.
The meeting wrapped up shortly after.
As Santos was about to head out, King’s assistant pulled him aside, guiding him to the elevator and down to the third basement level.
The third basement was where the heart of the base lay—the simulation room, with security tighter than in the outer areas.
King was already there by the time Santos walked in, standing before a stone platform.
The platform was etched with Sanskrit symbols, and in the center was a yin-yang symbol, though not quite complete, with two noticeable grooves where matching tokens should fit.
King’s focus was on the yin-yang symbol, not glancing at Santos as he approached. “Santos, you’ve been off your game lately.”
Santos also turned his eyes to the stone platform, eventually letting out a wry smile. “Seems nothing gets past you.”
