The Double or more Life of the Fake Heiress (Mirabella) novel Chapter 1820

The crew watching her from behind the glass were a bit miffed they hadn't nabbed her yet, but they weren't exactly sweating it either. Why? Well, they had a little surprise waiting downstairs. They weren't too fussed about her reaching the second floor—they'd only worry if she didn't make her way down to the first.

The leader cracked a cold smile, whispered a couple of polite words into his earpiece, and waved his team to fall back.

Nellie, having landed on the second-floor ledge, tucked herself under the eaves and pressed herself against the glass door leading inside, her legs still shaking just a tad. With a wry smile, she tilted her head back, acknowledging she wasn't as sharp as she once was—getting all frazzled by just a few folks on her tail. Back in the day, she wouldn't have set off the alarm right from the get-go. But something was off—how did they spot her so fast? Nellie took a deep breath, trying to shake off her confusion, and glanced at the graze left by a bullet on her arm.

The wound was pretty deep, and soon enough, her sleeve was soaked through with blood. She frowned but didn’t have the luxury to deal with the injury. Staying alert, she peeked inside and saw no one coming after her, at least for now.

She pushed the door open and slipped inside. No sooner had she stepped in, she heard a faint mechanical whir in the air. Nellie froze, her head snapping up in alarm.

The infrared sensors in the hallway had kicked into gear.

Instantly, several intense laser beams shot towards her, and Nellie's eyes widened as she rolled quickly to the side. She barely caught her breath before the beams swept her way again. Her heart raced, and despite her quick reflexes, a lock of her hair got singed off.

No time to dwell on that—she locked her eyes on the emergency exit a short sprint away. That spot was the corridor's only blind spot. Those five seconds felt like an eternity, but Nellie finally reached the door, shoving it open just before the infrared could tag her.

With a loud clang, the door slammed shut, and the threat was safely behind her.
