The base was swarming with guards, both inside and out. Even with Mirabella's top-notch skills, she was seriously outnumbered. Santos wasn't about to let this golden opportunity slip through his fingers.
He stepped back slowly, bracing himself for the outcome. Suddenly, a massive boom erupted from below, shaking the ground like an earthquake and making the walls quiver. Everyone froze, caught off guard by the explosion, even forgetting about Mirabella for a moment.
"What the heck just happened?" Santos muttered, frowning.
"The noise seemed to come from the direction of the mountain gate," the head of security quickly replied, pressing his earpiece, trying to get details about the explosion. But there was no response—the signal was dead.
Before he could say another word, the lights went out, plunging the corridor into pitch darkness. Without their senses, nobody could see a thing.
Santos and the head of security exchanged worried glances. This couldn’t be a coincidence, not at such a crucial moment. They both turned to where Mirabella had been standing, but all they could make out were guards dropping to the floor one by one.
Santos knew he had to get out of there fast. He was no match for Mirabella, and facing her would only end badly for him. Mirabella gave him a steely look, flicked her wrist, and a needle shot out, sharp and swift. Then she bolted in the opposite direction.
She knew the base's systems well enough to realize they’d be back online in three minutes. If she didn’t make a move now, escaping would be a nightmare. Plus, she was already pushing the half-hour deadline someone had set for her.
Mirabella’s expression stayed cool as ice. Boyfriends, she thought wryly, only ever slowed her down.
