"Sorry I'm late."
Penelope slipped into her seat with a calm air, not a hint of yesterday's loss to Mirabella in her expression. Jaime shot her a quick glance, pleased with her composure. If she'd shown any signs of defeat, they might have had to rethink her position as the heir.
"Now that we're all here, let's cut to the chase," the elder announced, scanning the room before his gaze lingered momentarily on Mirabella. "Yesterday’s test was just the basics; winning or losing wasn't the main point."
"As a future heir, your ability to handle issues trumps raw strength and is crucial for our family’s future. That's why the guild task in the second round is the real test of your capabilities."
Nick's brow furrowed at this. The underlying message was clear: no matter how well you did in the first round, the second one was the real deal. Even topping the initial test meant nothing if you flunked the next.
This seemed aimed right at his sister, undercutting her strength and clearly favoring Penelope. Everyone knew Penelope lost to his sister yesterday, and besides, his sister hadn’t really been involved in family matters much. How was she supposed to ace the guild task?
Nick's fists clenched, his face darkening, ready to speak up. But Mirabella, sitting right next to him, gently stopped him with a touch.
Nick turned to her, anger still simmering in his eyes. Mirabella gave him a soft smile, mouthing a silent message.
