The Elder glanced at the steward with a raised eyebrow. "What, do you think Miss Mira isn't part of the Davis family anymore?"
The steward's face froze, caught off guard. It wasn't that he doubted Miss Mira's abilities. Quickly, he clarified, "That's not what I meant, I just..."
But the Elder waved him off before he could finish. "Enough. You need to trust that Miss Mira can handle a simple contract."
Turning to Mirabella, the Elder gave her a warm smile. "Miss Mira, you've got this, right?"
Mirabella arched an eyebrow, her eyes brimming with confidence. "Absolutely."
"Then there's nothing more to discuss," the Elder said, sealing the decision. He picked up his tablet and started distributing guild tasks to the others.
The steward opened his mouth to protest but ended up sinking back into his chair, defeated.
With Keir out of the picture, the Elders had full control, orchestrating the heir evaluations like a well-rehearsed play. His objections would fall on deaf ears.
Before long, all the guild tasks were handed out, and the meeting wrapped up.
Most people had left, leaving just two branch stewards lingering at the conference table. Dan, the steward handling Ravenshade matters, looked particularly troubled.
"Come on, Dan," his colleague said, giving him a reassuring pat on the shoulder.
Dan gave a weak smile and stood up, still looking downcast.
