James had heard Mirabella talk about wanting to get back the ivory pendant more than once, so he'd been dodging the topic lately. Meanwhile, he had people digging into the Stevenson family, but the information was frustratingly sparse.
After a moment's pause, James reached into his pocket and pulled out the ivory pendant he always kept close. His voice carried a hint of nostalgia. "I remember when Catherine handed this to me, she said it would keep you safe..."
His eyes dropped slightly as his fingers tightened around the pendant before he passed it to Mirabella without saying more.
Mirabella's throat tightened unexpectedly as she looked at the pendant hovering in the air, but her face gave nothing away. She quickly reached out, gently ran her fingers over it, then held it in her palm, casually remarking, "You know how old folks can be with their superstitions."
An inanimate object couldn't possibly keep anyone safe, she thought, a bit wryly.
But she got what James was trying to say.
"Good people don't last long," Mirabella leaned back lazily, turning to flash a smile at James, "I’m not one of the good ones."
James nodded, his tone just as calm, "Funny, neither am I."
See, neither of them were good people. It made them quite the pair.
**Elsewhere.**
Santos sat in the car, his eyes fixed on the scene outside the window. Across from him loomed the imposing Defense Building, with two officers standing straight at the entrance, giving off a serious vibe even from a distance.
Santos glanced at it briefly before his attention shifted. His phone buzzed, and he slid on his earpiece. "…The person has shown up at the Security Bureau."
On his lap sat a laptop, displaying a map with a blinking red dot.
Looking closer, the blinking dot was right inside the Defense Building.
"Quicker than I thought," the voice on the other end of the line paused for a few beats. "You can let the word out now." "Got it," Santos responded without a rush.
