“She’s always liked Dan, you know. She came back this time just for a proper introduction—the families are both delighted; it’s a perfect match.”
Eleanor couldn’t wait to see Aurora’s face fall.
But Aurora’s expression didn’t change at all. She looked perfectly calm.
Disappointed, Eleanor pressed on, “They’re a great fit—completely well-matched.”
Aurora saw right through Eleanor’s little schemes.
It was almost funny. Eleanor’s feelings for Samuel were lukewarm at best.
She liked to claim she was acting for Samuel’s sake, but really, her mind was always caught up in romantic games.
“And what’s that got to do with me?” Aurora scoffed.
She stood up and walked away.
Daniel and Monica, who had just sat down, spotted Aurora immediately.
Daniel’s face changed; he stood up almost instinctively. “Aurora.”
She turned her head slightly, her tone cool and distant. “What is it?”
Daniel reached out and caught her wrist, pulling her closer to him.
Monica kept her smile polite and poised. “Dan, who’s this?”
Daniel’s grip tightened. “My wife.”
Those two words said everything.
Monica’s smile faltered. She’d heard Daniel and his wife weren’t on good terms, but she hadn’t realized he’d made up his mind about his feelings.
“Ms. Quinn,” she greeted.
Aurora hadn’t planned on getting involved in this mess. She yanked her hand free, offering a cordial smile. “We’re in the middle of our separation period, Ms. Cooper. Don’t mind me.”
“You two carry on.”
She walked away briskly.
Daniel hurried after her. “Aurora, let me explain.”
He caught her by the wrist again just outside the door, refusing to let go.
“My grandfather set this up. I just came to meet her—she means nothing to me.”
Aurora was hardly worth worrying about.
She just hadn’t expected Daniel to actually have feelings for Aurora.
“Eleanor, your Aurora isn’t quite as simple as you made her out to be. No wonder you haven’t managed to help Samuel.”
Eleanor let out a soft sigh, eyes glistening. “You’re right. She really is something.”
“No one in my family dares cross her.”
Monica patted her friend’s shoulder, brimming with confidence. “Don’t worry. Once things are settled between me and Daniel, I’ll help you get Samuel out.”
After all, these matches were all about two families being equals. Aurora had nothing—she’d be pushed aside soon enough.
Eleanor was grateful for her friend’s support.
“And Hans—he’ll be back soon,” Monica reminded her.
She genuinely liked Eleanor, and hoped she’d become her sister-in-law.
Eleanor’s heart skipped with excitement. “He… he’s really coming back?”
Hans was finally coming home.
