“We’re already divorced.”
Daniel stood by the window, his sharp features carved from stone, every inch of him radiating cold detachment.
Aurora lowered her gaze, fighting back a tide of bitterness and pain. She remembered what he’d said the day they signed the divorce papers: If she ever begged him again, she’d be left in pieces.
Now, she had no choice but to swallow her pride.
“You’re his only hope,” she said softly. “Daniel, please. I’m begging you. Save him.”
There was no warmth in his dark eyes as he glanced at her, his voice devoid of obligation. “I’m not required to do anything.”
They were no longer husband and wife. And besides, the boy wasn’t even his child. Whether he helped or not—either choice was justified.
Aurora gripped the bedsheet tight. She knew what Daniel wanted. He was waiting for her to give in. To completely surrender.
She knew he’d been holding onto some unspoken anger all this time.
Closing her eyes, Aurora let go of the last of her dignity.
“If you save him, I’ll agree to whatever you want,” she whispered, her voice trembling, the grief in her throat threatening to spill over.
Daniel laughed—a low, mocking sound.
Mocking her for finally bowing her head.
Mocking himself for still wanting her, even now.
“Are you sure?” he asked, his tone flat.
Aurora nodded. “Yes. I’m sure. What do you want?”
She was prepared for his answer. It was obvious—he wanted her in his bed. She could accept that.
“Life for a life,” Daniel said, his expression inscrutable, his words deliberate.
Aurora frowned, confused. “What does that mean?”
Daniel crossed the room with unhurried ease, stopping by the bed. He leaned down, his fingers gripping her chin a little too hard, his thumb brushing roughly along her jaw.
“If you want me to save Payne, you stay with me. When you’re pregnant, I’ll agree to help him.”
Aurora’s eyes went wide, and she recoiled instinctively. “No.”
She couldn’t accept this. Daniel was getting engaged to Monica tomorrow—soon, they’d be married. Now he wanted Aurora to have his child? What did he take her for? A mistress? Her child, a bastard?
