Aurora was caught completely off guard. How could Daniel… how could he say something like that?
Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears, humiliation tightening her throat.
Daniel said nothing. He turned her around, pressing close from behind, his Adam’s apple bobbing as his voice broke out in a rough, sensual rasp.
He bit her earlobe—hard, punishing—his breath hot against her skin. “Are you afraid he’ll find out you spent the night in my bed?”
The humiliation in his words made Aurora furious. Her eyes glistened with angry tears.
She hated this position and tried to turn around, but Daniel pushed her back down, holding her in place.
“I don’t like him,” she said through gritted teeth.
Daniel didn’t believe her. If she really didn’t care about him, why would she lose control every time they met? He could never forget the look in her eyes—that intense, longing gaze a woman reserves for the man she loves. Passionate and tangled. Everyone else in the room faded to insignificance.
“Aurora, do you really think lying will help?” He laughed, low and derisive, his grip tightening on her.
Aurora bit down on her pillow, her voice breaking, “If you don’t believe me, why do you keep wanting me here?”
Daniel didn’t answer. He just held her tighter, wanting her in a way that was desperate and punishing.
The next morning, Aurora woke up feeling like she’d been taken apart and put back together wrong. Every muscle ached.
The other side of the bed was cold—Daniel had left at some point in the night.
She wrapped the blanket around herself and sat there for a while, finally forcing herself up. After washing up, eating a quick breakfast, and taking her medicine, she made her way to the hospital.
Payne was getting an injection. He was such a brave little boy; after the shot, he just lay quietly on the bed, not making a sound.
Aurora was about to go in when she ran into Louis coming out.
He pulled her aside, lowering his voice. “Are you two together now?”
Aurora didn’t bother denying it. “Yes.”
Louis rubbed his forehead, pacing anxiously. “I told you, I’d try to find another way.”
“But this is the best way,” she replied quietly.
