She hadn’t planned to come clean this soon. After all, Payne had been with Louis for three years; she always thought she’d have time to ease into the truth.
But Louis had discovered she wasn’t Payne’s biological mother.
She had no choice but to admit it.
“He’s not a burden to me,” Louis snapped at Aurora, irritation simmering in his tone. “If you’re not his real mother, then you have no reason to look for Daniel.”
He hesitated, then pushed on, “And who is his mother?”
Louis had lost his memory. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t recall who Payne’s mother was.
But Aurora knew.
She refused to answer, just gave a soft, almost wistful laugh. “Maybe it’s a blessing, Louis. Start fresh. Leave the past behind.”
“You don’t get to decide that for me.” Anger finally broke through Louis’s restraint. He grabbed Aurora’s shoulders, his grip tight and desperate. “Tell me who his mother is. I need her to get tested as a donor for Payne.”
His son was all he could think about.
Aurora’s eyes shimmered with tears, haunted by memories she wished she could forget.
“Say something!” Louis’s voice shook with urgency.
Aurora turned her head away, pain and despair crashing over her. Tears spilled freely down her cheeks.
“She’s dead.”
“What?” Louis recoiled, unable to process it.
Dead? How could she be dead?
Saying the words seemed to lift a weight from Aurora’s chest. She brushed Louis’s hands away, stepped back, and repeated herself—this time with careful, deliberate clarity.
“She died not long after giving birth to Payne.”
A handful of calm words, yet the grief was palpable.
Louis stood frozen, unable to speak.
He’d considered so many reasons why Payne’s mother had never appeared. But he’d never imagined the truth would be so devastating.
She… was gone?
Something flickered in his mind, a memory just out of reach, but before he could grasp it, a sharp pain exploded behind his eyes. He clutched his head and dropped to a crouch, breath ragged from the agony.
Aurora choked back a sob but made no move to help him.
