Trash Husband, I'm the Top novel Chapter 171

Eleanor noticed something was off with him and reached for the tablet. “What is it?”

“A paternity test?”

“Aurora and Payne… aren’t related?” Eleanor stared at the screen in disbelief.

She scrolled through the report again and again, not trusting her own eyes.

“But Aurora herself admitted she was the boy’s mother,” Eleanor said, her shock plain as day. “Why would she lie about that?”

Daniel closed his eyes. In truth, the answer was painfully simple.

It was because of love—love by association.

The man Aurora cared for was Louis, so she cared for the child he left behind.

Eleanor set the tablet aside and slipped her arm gently through Daniel’s. Her voice was soft, comforting. “Don’t let this get to you. Maybe Aurora just genuinely cared for the kid, nothing more.”

“Besides, you two are already divorced. It’s time to let her go.”

“Monica knows she was wrong. Can’t you give her another chance?”

She pleaded on her friend’s behalf, sincerely hoping Daniel would finally agree to marry Monica. If that happened, her own chances with Hans would only improve.

Daniel opened his eyes. They were calm—cold, even—but inside, the pain was sharper than ever.

Will spoke up carefully, almost in a whisper. “Payne’s in critical condition. Ms. Aurora is already at the hospital.”

Payne needed a bone marrow transplant, and right now, only Daniel was a match.

This business trip was supposed to last two weeks.

Eleanor shot Will an annoyed look. “They’re divorced. What happens to her has nothing to do with Daniel anymore.”

“Don’t let yourself get soft,” she warned Daniel. “Let that kid fend for himself.”

The boarding announcement echoed through the terminal.

Daniel stood up.

But instead of heading for the gate, he turned and walked the other way.

“To the hospital,” he said quietly.

In the end, he couldn’t harden his heart.

———

Payne had a close call, but the doctors managed to pull him back from the brink.

Seeing his small, frail body hooked up to all those machines was enough to break anyone’s heart.
