It was the first time Daniel had ever looked at Payne this closely.
The boy reminded him so much of Aurora—frail and small from illness, his skin almost translucent.
He looked like a helpless kitten.
Daniel reached out and gently ruffled the child’s hair, softening his tone just a little. “No need to thank me.”
Polite, but not exactly warm.
The truth was, Daniel didn’t care much for this child.
Besides, after the surgery, their paths probably wouldn’t cross again.
But then, out of nowhere, Payne suddenly flung himself into Daniel’s arms—thin little arms around his neck, legs clinging to his waist.
Aurora stared, stunned.
Daniel froze.
Payne let out a wail. “Hold me! I’m slipping!”
His small body began to slide downward.
Daniel snapped out of it just in time, catching Payne’s slight frame in his palms.
He’d never held a child this fragile before. Every muscle in his body went rigid—unsure whether he should hold on tighter or let go.
Once Payne felt secure, he planted a noisy kiss on Daniel’s cheek and declared, at the top of his lungs, “I like him!”
Aurora’s eyes sparkled with amusement. “Call him Mr. Chambers.”
“Mr. Chambers!” Payne repeated, all smiles and enthusiasm.
Daniel looked a bit awkward, but his posture relaxed. He simply replied with a quiet “Mm.”
Aurora took Payne from his arms, settling the boy back on the bed. She pinched his cheek affectionately. “Mr. Chambers likes you too.”
Daniel shot Aurora a sidelong glance.
He didn’t like this little ragamuffin one bit.
But the tenderness on Aurora’s face, the love shining in her eyes—it was like a shaft of light, piercing through the walls he’d built inside.
The words he’d meant to say died on his lips, and he didn’t even realize a faint smile had crept onto his face.
