Payne clung tightly to Aurora’s neck, his eyes full of wariness.
“I don’t know you. You’re not my grandpa—you’re a bad man.”
His father had warned him: never trust strangers.
Besides, just now, this bad man tried to carry him off without a word. Payne had only cried harder to resist.
Jordan rubbed his eyes, trying to coax him. “Payne, Grandpa’s house has lots of fun toys. How about coming over to play?”
Aurora understood at once. She let out a cold laugh. “So that’s your plan.”
He wanted to use Payne to threaten Grandma Grace.
Despicable.
“Can’t you see that Grandma doesn’t want anything to do with Mr. Hogan Chambers? Forcing her like this—do you even deserve to call yourself her son?” Aurora spat the words out, not caring for politeness.
It was the first time she’d ever met someone so willing to sacrifice both his mother and his daughter for his own gain.
There was not a shred of decency in him.
Exposed, Jordan dropped the act and straightened his back, his tone hardening.
“You don’t understand. The closer we are to the Chambers family, the better things will be for us—the Quinns. Aurora, you’re part of this family too. When we make it big, you’ll enjoy the benefits as well. Don’t you get it?”
Aurora didn’t get it—and didn’t want to. To her, this was nothing but shameless opportunism.
“Do whatever you want, but leave Grandma and Payne out of it. If you touch them, you’ll regret it.”
Jordan’s expression darkened. He needed Grandma Grace and Payne—nothing else would do.
Aurora was a fool, passing up wealth that was right in front of her.
“Aurora, you’re in no position to call the shots in this family.” Jordan’s patience snapped. He reached out, grabbing for Payne. “I’m taking him with me today.”
Aurora refused to let go.
They struggled, and Payne began wailing loudly.
Afraid Payne would get hurt, Aurora was forced to loosen her grip.
“Jordan!”
She was shaking with fury. “He’s still sick—let him go!”
Payne sobbed even harder, his face red and tear-streaked.
Aurora’s heart felt like it was being crushed.
