She jumped in surprise and hurried to look for them.

Voices and laughter drifted from the living room.

Payne was busy stacking colorful wooden blocks, his little hands moving with concentration.

Not far away, Daniel sat on the sofa, deep in conversation with Mr. Austin. Every so often, Daniel would pause to offer Payne a gentle tip on building his tower higher.

The whole scene radiated warmth and harmony.

Nora watched for a moment, her heart easing a little, before she stepped inside.

“Mr. Austin,” she greeted softly.

Daniel rose to meet her, guiding her gently to sit down. “I asked Mr. Austin to take a look at you,” he murmured.

Mr. Austin was already opening his medical bag, motioning for Nora to rest her wrist on the soft cloth he’d laid out.

Nora complied, feeling a little self-conscious.

After a few minutes, Mr. Austin nodded. “Your pulse is steady. Physically, you’re recovering well, but your heart is heavy. You need to find a way to let go, or it will wear you down.”

He wrote a prescription, and Daniel quietly instructed someone to fetch the medicine.

Packing up his things, Mr. Austin offered Nora a few words of comfort. “You have my condolences. Your grandmother loved you dearly. If you don’t take care of yourself, she won’t be at peace, even in heaven.”

Nora’s eyes grew moist. She nodded, voice barely above a whisper. “I know. Thank you.”

“For your child’s sake, you must take care of yourself,” Mr. Austin reminded her gently.

“I will,” she promised.

Daniel arranged dinner for them all. After the meal, Mr. Austin accompanied them to the funeral home to pay their respects.

The funeral home was cold and quiet, shadows stretching across the room. Samuel and Eleanor were at the front, burning slips of paper in a somber ritual, playing the part of the dutiful grandchildren.

Mrs. Quinn had dozed off, her head lolling to one side.

After offering his condolences, Mr. Austin took his leave.

Louis soon arrived to pick up Payne. Before he left, he spent a long while comforting Nora, speaking to her in low, reassuring tones.

They talked quietly together, voices barely audible.

Samuel glanced at his sister. “Now that we know Aurora was an imposter, what about the boy?”
