Half a minute later, his voice faded as he took the call.
He never came back to the room after that.
Nora drifted off to sleep not long after.
She had no idea how much time had passed when a loud knock at the door startled her awake.
"Come in," she called, sitting up.
A maid stood in the doorway. "Ma’am, something’s happened to Mr. Chambers."
Nora, startled, instinctively called out the familiar name.
Before she could say anything more, the maid added, "Will is waiting for you downstairs."
A sinking feeling crept into Nora’s chest. Even Will is here?
She glanced at the clock. It was only just past seven in the morning.
"I’ll be right down."
She hurriedly changed and went downstairs.
Will was waiting in the living room, visibly anxious. As soon as he saw Nora, he jumped to his feet. "Ma’am, there’s been an incident with Mr. Chambers. You need to come with me."
Nora said nothing, her eyes cool and guarded as she stared at him.
Realizing his mistake, Will quickly corrected himself. "Ms. Cooper, I’m sorry—would you please come with me?"
Nora frowned slightly. "What happened?"
Will hesitated, then said only that it had to do with Mrs. Chambers. They needed to go to her place right away.
Nora didn’t want to go. Mrs. Chambers doted on her son like he was the center of her universe; what could possibly have gone wrong?
But she remembered—she still needed something from Daniel. She couldn’t refuse.
"Let’s go."
