Jordan was only ever good at working the social circuit; he was never much of a businessman.
Samuel, on the other hand, had grown up pampered—more competent than Jordan, sure, but untested, fragile when real storms hit.
Now, the scandal involving Nora and Aurora had exploded, and public backlash had the company trapped in a downward spiral, barely surviving.
Left with no other option, Samuel came to Daniel, hoping he’d step in and help.
Daniel studied Samuel’s haggard face. “You should’ve thought of this before you came back.”
Samuel clenched his jaw. “Dad’s not thinking straight these days. What else am I supposed to do?”
Daniel gave him nothing but an old saying: “Put off hard decisions, and chaos will follow.”
The message was crystal clear—he wouldn’t help.
Samuel had known things between them had changed, but hearing Daniel’s blunt refusal still stung.
He glanced toward the hospital room. “Is it because of her?”
“No.”
Samuel couldn’t let it go. “I’ve always wondered… with someone like Nora, how did she ever catch your eye?”
The Chambers family was old money, and after Nora’s background came to light, everyone had their eyes on the future Mrs. Chambers. But Daniel only ever cared about Nora.
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
Why her?
He didn’t really know himself. Maybe he just wanted to stay true to one person.
He didn’t answer.
Daniel slipped into the room. Nora had already finished getting ready for the day.
She’d heard Samuel had come by. “He wanted your help?”
Daniel leaned in and kissed her. “Yes. I turned him down.”
He watched her closely, waiting to see if this would make her happy.
Nora’s expression barely changed.
She finished breakfast and then went to check on Payne.
