As usual, Nora woke up at the hospital before heading downstairs to visit Payne.

Payne was in better spirits today and had made a point of coming down to meet her.

“Payne!” Nora waved, hurrying over to him.

Payne ran toward her, but his foot suddenly caught on something at the top of the steps. In an instant, he tumbled down, his small body rolling to the bottom.

“Payne!” Nora screamed, rushing to scoop him into her arms.

His face was ashen, eyes tightly shut.

The doctors arrived quickly, whisking Payne away to the ER.

Nora’s eyes were red and swollen, her whole body trembling.

“Aurora!” Daniel rushed in, pulling her into his arms.

“Daniel, Payne fell—he’s covered in blood.” Nora clung to his shirt as if it were a lifeline. “Daniel, please… you have to save him.”

Her voice broke with sobs.

Grandma was gone; she couldn’t bear to lose Payne too.

Daniel tried to calm her, his hand gentle on her back. “He’s not out yet because the stem cell graft was successful. He’s in surgery now—they’re doing the transplant. Don’t worry.”

Nora’s eyes glistened with fresh tears. “Surgery?”

She’d been so lost in guilt and grief that she hadn’t realized Payne was already in the operating room for the transplant.

Daniel nodded.

But his reassurance did little to ease her worry.
