Whenever Hogan Chambers mentioned Eleanor, his composure shattered, no matter how hard he tried to hold it together.

“That’s enough,” Hogan Chambers said, his face darkening. “The five percent stake is a personal gift from me. It has nothing to do with you.”

Furious, Mrs. Chambers slammed her cutlery down and left the table.

The meal ended in oppressive silence.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

The first chill of autumn crept into the night.
