Nora stared out the window, her emotions churning beneath a calm surface.
Daniel looked away toward the opposite side, his face hard, anger simmering in his eyes.
Neither of them was willing to back down this time.
The tension lasted until the car rolled to a stop at a red light.
Nora turned, her voice hoarse as she issued a warning.
“Daniel, if you dare touch Payne, forget about the baby I’m carrying. Don’t even think about it.”
She was done holding back.
She refused to return to that suffocating life.
Daniel’s gaze grew icy cold. So, it was true—her heart was only with Payne. That was why she was threatening him with the baby.
Now, they’d both found each other’s weakness.
“Nora, do you really not feel anything for him at all?” Daniel’s chest tightened painfully.
He’d never imagined she could be so cold.
Now that the mask of her old identity had fallen away, she was showing a new side—one he barely recognized.
Nora pressed her nails into her palm, her expression eerily calm and detached.
“I told you already—I don’t want your child.”
She wanted to be a mother, yes, but not to a child whose father was Daniel.
He didn’t deserve it.
Daniel lowered his gaze, dark emotions swirling behind his eyes.
He spoke slowly, deliberately. “Nora, I told you before—forcing things is my specialty. So you’d do best to behave, and bring this child into the world.”
Nora let out a cold, mirthless laugh. “Then please, Mr. Chambers, stay far away from me. Otherwise, I can’t promise what I might do.”
“If anything happens to him, then let Payne take the fall with him.”
“I will,” she replied, her voice sharp as broken glass. “I’ll go down with him.”
The air inside the car bristled with anger, dropping to a frigid silence.
Neither spoke again.
When the car finally delivered Nora back to North Manor, Daniel didn’t even get out. He drove off without a backward glance.
Some time later, a housekeeper came by to let Nora know Daniel wouldn’t be joining her for dinner, and asked what she’d like to eat.
Her head throbbing, Nora just asked the kitchen to make her something simple.
