Nora frowned, her gaze fixed on Una, watching every flicker of emotion cross her friend’s face.
“What happened?”
Una forced a brittle smile. “Aurora, I’ve been thinking… I don’t want to leave you here alone after all. I don’t want to go.”
Nora didn’t buy it. “Was that Hans on the phone just now?”
She’d guessed it.
Una glanced at the man standing behind Nora, her expression strained.
“It wasn’t him. Really, Aurora. I’m just not feeling well—let’s head back, okay?”
She grabbed her suitcase and Nora’s hand, practically dragging her out of the terminal in a rush, as if afraid Nora would shove her onto the plane by force.
They had just made it outside when they nearly collided with Daniel.
He looked at Una, surprise clouding his features. “You didn’t leave?”
He’d known Una was supposed to fly out today. He was only here to pick up Nora.
Una fumbled for an excuse. “I, uh…forgot something.”
Daniel’s gaze was sharp, unyielding. “You should go, Una.”
Given everything that was happening, her leaving was best for everyone.
Una tightened her grip on her suitcase handle. She knew that. She didn’t want to stay either.
But…
She didn’t have a choice.
Nora couldn’t watch any longer.
She had a pretty good idea that Una’s sudden change of heart was because of that phone call. Una refused to explain, but so what? Whether she stayed or left was Una’s decision.
“That’s enough, Daniel.” Nora stepped protectively in front of her friend, glaring at him. “Una knows what she’s doing.”
Daniel pinched the bridge of his nose, looking frustrated.
