Nora had always believed that Daniel was infatuated with Eleanor; it was the only explanation for his endless patience with her. But it wasn’t fair for him to force that burden on everyone else—on people like herself, or like Una.
“Is it Hans? Did he threaten you? If you press this, he’ll call off the engagement with Eleanor—is that it?” Nora’s words were only a guess, but her intuition told her she was probably right.
Daniel lowered his voice. “I’ll give you an explanation about Una.”
But Nora didn’t believe him. Without another word, she strode toward the hospital room. She needed to ask Hans directly.
Daniel stepped in front of her again, gripping her wrist, leaning in so his eyes met hers. “Nora, I told you—about Una, I’ll give you an explanation.”
“And I told you—I don’t believe you.”
She had already asked Louis to look everywhere for Una, and still there was no sign of her. The longer Una was missing, the more anxious Nora became. All she wanted now was to confront Hans.
“Hans! Come out here!” Nora called out, her voice ringing down the hall.
“Nora.” Daniel’s tone turned icy. “That’s enough.”
She shook off his hand. Louis did his best to keep Daniel back, and Nora managed to slip into the room.
Eleanor let out a shrill scream. “I don’t want to see her!”
“Nora, must you torment Eleanor like this?” Mrs. Quinn snapped, her refined features twisted with rage. She stepped in front of her daughter, shielding her with her body.
Eleanor hugged her knees to her chest, sobbing. “Nora, how far do you want to go? What do you want from me? Haven’t you hurt me enough?”
As if she were the victim here, and Nora was the monster ruining her life.
Nora ignored Eleanor’s theatrics and focused on the tall man standing by the bed. “Hans. I need to talk to you.”
Hans seemed lost in thought, but as soon as he started to approach, Eleanor clung to his sleeve, her face ashen. “Hans, don’t go.”
