The hallway echoed with Eleanor’s heartbroken sobs.
Nora knew there was no point pressing for answers anymore.
She turned to Louis. “Let’s go.”
He nodded, and together they stepped into the elevator.
Downstairs, Louis went to get the car while Nora waited by the front entrance.
As the car pulled up and she moved to get in, someone grabbed her arm and yanked her back.
It was Daniel.
His voice was cold and detached. “I’ll take you home.”
Nora shot him a biting look. “Not going to stay by Eleanor’s side?”
Daniel’s grip on her wrist tightened, his tone sharp and steely. “Nora, does this have to go on forever?”
Go on forever?
She repeated those words over and over in her mind, finding them nothing short of absurd.
Was she the one who couldn’t let things go?
He hadn’t believed her—accused her of abandoning Eleanor when she needed help—and now he was blaming her for making a scene.
Who was really dragging this out?
Louis had already gotten out of the car. Out of respect for the fact that Daniel had saved Payne, he kept his voice civil.
“Someone did harass her tonight. She ran into my suite asking for help. Check the security footage, you’ll see the drunk who was bothering her.”
The evidence was there. It was just up to Daniel whether he wanted to see the truth.
But Nora’s heart had already gone cold.
“Why bother explaining?” she said flatly. “It’s always my fault anyway.”
“I should’ve just thrown myself into the line of fire, right? Then Ms. Quinn could’ve run away safely.”
“She gets hurt, it must be my doing.”
Daniel’s chest rose and fell rapidly, his anger barely contained.
“When did I ever say you were to blame for what happened to her?”
Nora let out a long, drawn-out “Oh.” “Wasn’t it? When you shoved me aside for her, I figured I was public enemy number one.”
She could still picture the scene, the fear rising in her chest. If Louis hadn’t been there, she might have lost her baby again.
Daniel’s expression shifted. Had he really pushed her?
