Trash Husband, I'm the Top novel Chapter 274

“Son, please—listen to your mother, just do as the family asks.”

Mrs. Winters broke down in tears.

The elderly Mrs. Winters, who had always understood her daughter-in-law’s temperament, let out a weary sigh. “I never realized it before, but you never really liked Payne, did you?”

Mrs. Winters’ voice was laced with sorrow. “Of course I love him.”

He was Louis’s son—her own grandson. How could she not care for him?

She had simply chosen her son over everything else.

Louis cut her off. “Tell me what really happened back then. I want the truth.”

He couldn’t remember what happened three years ago, and he’d been searching for those lost memories ever since.

Now, it seemed, Mrs. Winters knew more than she’d ever let on.

Mrs. Winters sobbed, but not a single word passed her lips.

Louis stood in heavy silence, his mind in turmoil, then turned and left without another word.

Mrs. Winters stumbled after him for a few steps, covering her face as tears slipped through her fingers.

She alone had taken people to Millbrook that night, and she’d given the order to have him knocked unconscious.

But if she hadn’t, he would’ve died.

Nora received Louis’s call. After hearing everything—how it started, how it ended—she, too, was silent.

Through the glass door to the balcony, she watched Payne. Her gaze softened. “So that’s how it is… Payne, you’ll stay with me, all right?”

She hung up.

Payne came running onto the balcony, holding up a paper airplane, his eyes shining. “Mommy, look! It’s a plane!”

Nora gathered herself, smoothing her hand over his soft hair and praising him gently.

“You’re so clever, Payne.”

Payne darted about the balcony, waving his paper plane in delight.

“I’m going to make lots and lots of paper airplanes for my little sister when she comes.”

Nora’s eyes stung; she nearly started crying.
