Nora had come back early with Louis precisely because she was afraid Daniel would pull something like this again.
But it seemed the more you worried, the more likely it was to happen—Daniel had lost it this time.
They were just about to step into the elevator when he appeared.
Fury and frustration welled up inside her, and she spat at him through gritted teeth, “You’re unbelievable, Daniel. Don’t you have any shame?”
“So what if I don’t?” Daniel shot back, utterly unfazed.
It wasn’t until he’d practically shoved her into the car that Nora managed to regain some control over herself.
She lashed out, kicking him square in the chest—more by luck than aim.
Daniel barely glanced down, then calmly caught her ankle and set her foot gently back down.
“Careful. Think of the baby,” he said, his tone cool.
Up front, the driver had already raised the privacy screen, tactfully ignoring whatever drama unfolded behind him.
Nora closed her eyes and leaned against the window. Since there was no escaping, she didn’t even bother arguing anymore. Besides, her phone and everything else were still back in the dining room.
Seeing her finally quiet, Daniel let her be.
But instead of heading for a hotel, the car took them straight to North Manor.
The house was eerily empty—no one around.
Daniel kept a firm grip on her wrist as he led her inside and settled her onto the couch.
“All the staff are on holiday,” he said.
Nora glanced at the cold, empty kitchen. “So, what’s your plan? Starve me? Or were you hoping I’d cook for you, never mind the fact that I’m pregnant?”
Daniel would never let her lift a finger.
Instead, he fetched a pair of soft slippers and, in a rare gesture of humility, knelt to help her put them on.
“Just stay here and behave,” he said quietly. “I’ll take you home after dinner.”
His voice was gentle, but there was a warning in it too.
Then he rolled up his sleeves and headed for the kitchen himself.
Nora realized he was actually going to cook. She gave a short, mocking laugh, then turned her attention to the TV, flipping through channels until she landed on some light reality show.
About half an hour later, Daniel called her in for dinner.
He’d made three simple dishes and a soup—plain and mild.
