Nora didn’t have many friends, so she only invited Warner and Hans.
Warner brought along his younger sister, Irene Frost, while Hans, as always, was accompanied by Eleanor, who insisted on tagging along.
A few other close friends from their circle rounded out the small gathering.
Louis kept the announcement about their marriage brief. He simply explained that he planned to settle down with Nora in Millbrook, and that they probably wouldn’t be coming back much in the future.
Hans assumed Louis and Nora had finally confirmed their feelings for each other, so he wouldn’t let Louis off without pressing for details about the wedding.
Louis could only brush him off, saying they’d talk about it after Nora had the baby.
Eleanor couldn’t resist a jab. “Mr. Winters, you really are generous—raising another man’s child.”
Hans’ smile faded a little as he shot her a look.
Eleanor’s expression turned wounded. “Well, I’m not wrong, am I?”
You had to admit, Nora’s luck was remarkable. She’d lived three good years under the name “Aurora,” then married Hans, and even when her real identity was revealed, Daniel had still protected her.
And now, she was carrying Daniel’s child and marrying Mr. Winters.
If that wasn’t a comeback, what was?
Hans’s face was unreadable. “If you don’t like it here, you can leave. Right now.”
He clearly had no patience for her.
Eleanor bit her lip and fell silent, not daring to say more.
Across the room, Nora was helping Payne with his dinner. Irene sat on Payne’s other side, her eyes bright and innocent.
“Nora, is this your son?” Irene asked.
Nora smiled gently at her. “Yes, he is.”
“He’s adorable—and so well-behaved!”
“Do you like children, Ms. Frost?” Nora asked.
Irene nodded eagerly. “I love kids! Actually, I work as a preschool teacher.”
The sweetness in her smile matched her name.
Nora found herself quite taken with her.
They chatted for a while.
When Payne finished eating and wanted to play outside, Irene immediately volunteered to go with him.
