Mrs. Chambers hesitated before finally asking, “What’s this about the candy?”
Daniel’s voice was cold. “The police will get to the bottom of it. You should go home.”
Unhappy, Mrs. Chambers wanted to argue, but seeing the exhaustion etched on her son’s face, she swallowed her words and left in silence.
In the quiet room, Daniel closed his eyes.
He’d gone there out of stubbornness, unable to let things go.
When he’d stepped out into the hallway outside the private suite, he’d run into Payne and exchanged a few words. Afterward, a business partner had called, pulling him away in a hurry.
He hadn’t given him the candy.
The police would uncover all of this.
A little over an hour later, his lawyer came in and told him he was free to leave.
Sitting in the car, Daniel listened as Will briefed him on the investigation’s findings.
The security cameras outside the suite had been malfunctioning, so there was no footage showing how Payne got the lollipop.
“The only witness is Ms. Frost—Irene,” Will said.
“But she didn’t actually see you give the candy to Mr. Payne. She only asked Payne about it, and he said it was you, Mr. Chambers.”
“For now, we’ll have to wait until Mr. Payne wakes up.”
Daniel stared out at the fractured city lights and told the driver to take him to the hospital.
Payne had already regained consciousness. Louis was helping him drink some water, and Nora stood by with tissues, gently dabbing away the drops from his lips.
Watching them, Daniel felt his urge to storm in and demand answers drain away.
Instead, he turned and sat down on a bench in the hallway, waiting quietly.
The sight of her happiness was almost blinding, but suddenly, Daniel couldn’t bring himself to care anymore.
So be it, he thought.
It’s time to let go.
He lowered his gaze, collecting his scattered emotions in the stillness of the corridor.
A door opened nearby.
He looked up and saw Louis.
The two men exchanged glances, but the old hostility was gone.
“You…” Louis began, wanting to talk about Payne’s poisoning.
But Daniel cut him off. “I’d like to speak with Nora alone.”
Louis nodded and went inside to get her.
