Trash Husband, I'm the Top novel Chapter 296

Had he really let go just like that?

It wasn’t until a chill gust slapped her face by the window that Nora snapped out of her daze.

It was over. Truly over between them.

From now on, their paths would part—his life and hers, separate for good.

Louis came over and closed the window tightly. “What did he say?”

Nora’s face was pale, but her eyes were calm. “He said it’s really over between us.”

Louis offered a small, polite smile. “Congratulations.”

Her heart, so adrift and empty, finally settled back in her chest.

The tension drained from her shoulders. She could breathe again.

She said quietly, “Daniel mentioned he saw Payne, but he didn’t give him any candy.”

“I talked to Payne,” Louis replied, frowning. “He says it was Mr. Chambers who gave him the candy, not Daniel. But without cameras, all we have is a child’s word—there’s no way to be sure.”

Nora entered the hospital room and sat beside Payne, gently asking him again.

He answered, “It was after Mr. Chambers left. Another man came in—he told me to call him Mr. Chambers too, and gave me candy.”

Nora stroked his hair, her voice soft. “Sweetheart, we never take treats from strangers. Do you understand?”

Payne’s eyes brimmed with tears. “I just wanted to know what candy tasted like.”

“I’m sorry, Mom. I promise, I’ll never eat anything from a stranger again.”

He’d always been frail, forbidden from sweets since he was little.

But what child isn’t tempted by candy?

Now that he was finally better, of course he wanted to try something sweet. But someone with an agenda had found their chance.

Nora hugged him tightly, her heart aching. How could she bring herself to scold him now?
