Mrs. Quinn’s voice suddenly rose, sharp and unyielding. “What could possibly be so secret? Are you about to make up a story to deceive your own mother?”
She was prepared to risk everything for her daughter.
Daniel’s face grew cold.
The more anxious Mrs. Chambers became, the angrier she felt. She fixed her gaze on her son, her voice low and trembling with accusation. “Speak.”
Daniel met his mother’s eyes. “Mom.”
Mrs. Quinn looked on, barely concealing her schadenfreude.
“She’s your husband’s biological daughter. Daniel’s half-sister.”
Mrs. Chambers paled. She stumbled back a step, staring at her son in disbelief.
“She’s telling the truth? You’ve known all along?”
There was no point in hiding it anymore. Daniel answered, “Yes.”
Mrs. Chambers pressed a trembling hand to her chest. Her face was ashen, her eyes hollow with despair.
She’d held onto her marriage for years, enduring her husband’s long absences and even the threat of divorce. She’d borne the whispers and humiliation, clinging to her place as Mrs. Chambers for her son’s sake. Even when things were at their worst, she’d laid down a single condition: that her husband must never have a child with another woman.
It was all about protecting her son’s inheritance.
Yet her own son had helped his father keep this secret, hiding the existence of a half-sister.
The sting of betrayal cut deeper than anything she’d ever known.
Daniel reached out to steady her. “Mom, I’m sorry.”
He hadn’t learned the truth until after Eleanor ran away from her wedding. That was when Mrs. Quinn had come to him, tears streaming down her face, revealing Eleanor’s parentage.
He’d always despised the idea of illegitimate children. But Eleanor was different. She’d saved his life—and she was his sister by blood.
He couldn’t just turn his back on her.
Nora had been standing quietly nearby, but now understanding dawned.
So this was why Daniel always put Eleanor first. Why Eleanor was so certain Daniel would take her side. Of course—because they were siblings.
