After all these years, there’s nothing quite as painful as having a house you can’t call home.
Daniel glanced at Nora. “Aurora, take Mom upstairs and let her rest.”
Nora hesitated. She and Mrs. Chambers were like oil and water—never meant to mix.
And then there was the child she carried, a child Mrs. Chambers despised.
If Mrs. Chambers ever “lost control,” Nora shuddered to think of the consequences.
Daniel seemed to realize this too, so he instructed a maid to help Mrs. Chambers upstairs instead.
Only then did Nora rise, trailing at a safe distance behind them as they climbed the stairs.
At the landing, Mrs. Chambers shot Daniel a frosty look. “Look at this—this is the bloodline of the Chambers family. Rotten from the root. And you still want to stay and be this family’s matriarch?”
The thought of her son sheltering her husband’s illegitimate daughter, even bringing her into the Chambers family as a “foster sister” and lavishing her with wealth and status—it was enough to drain Mrs. Chambers of all hope.
Now, Daniel wanted her to divorce and leave the house altogether.
She hated everyone here.
Nora held her tongue, content to simply observe the drama unfolding.
But Mrs. Chambers refused to budge. She fixed her gaze on Nora’s belly, venom in her voice. “Why keep trash like that in this world? It’d be better if you all just died.”
Nora instinctively shielded her stomach, recognizing the madness in Mrs. Chambers’ eyes.
She wasn’t sure the maid could hold her back if she snapped.
“Have you ever considered,” Nora said quietly, “if there’s a divorce, who’ll be the one to leave in the end?”
Nora had no desire to get involved, but Mrs. Chambers knew only one emotion—rage. Reason was beyond her.
Nora was genuinely afraid she’d lose control.
Mrs. Chambers clenched her jaw. “Obviously me. I’m the outsider here. They’re all Chambers.”
Nora shook her head. “But I think, if it came to divorce, the one leaving would be him.”
Mrs. Chambers stared at her, stunned. “Impossible.”
Nora understood Daniel better than anyone—that’s why she dared to say it.
Just then, a sudden banging came from downstairs, followed by Brian’s furious voice. “Daniel, are you out of your mind? You dare lay a hand on me?”
