Nora kissed her son’s cheek. “Payne, don’t you like it here?”
Payne tugged at her sleeve, his voice barely above a whisper. “I want to be with Daddy. I want to go home.”
He’d already been terrified after being taken to Monica’s place against his will, only to hear Monica say all those awful things about his father not wanting him.
Now Payne’s heart was full of anxiety and fear.
He just wanted his dad.
Daniel stepped forward, his tone gentle and affectionate. “Isn’t staying with Mr. Chambers nice?”
Payne pressed his lips together, eyes brimming with tears. “I want Daddy.”
After everything that had happened, the only person Payne wanted to be near was the one who’d always stayed by his side.
Louis’s heart ached for his son.
“It’s the weekend tomorrow. I’ll take him to my place for a couple of days,” he suggested softly.
Nora nodded. “That’s fine.” Then she turned to Payne, brushing his hair back. “Mommy will come pick you up in a few days, okay?”
But Payne shook his head and clung to her shirt. “Mommy, come too.”
He couldn’t stand the thought of his parents being apart.
Nora hesitated, glancing up at Daniel. His gaze was cold, almost indifferent.
She understood his meaning at once.
“But Mommy has things she can’t get away from right now. Be good for me, Payne.”
Payne’s face crumpled and he burst into tears, louder and more stubborn than ever before.
“I want Daddy and Mommy together. I want to go home!”
He squirmed and fought to break free.
Daniel’s expression darkened. He gently pulled Payne from Nora’s arms and handed him over to Louis.
Payne wailed, his cries filling the room—calling for his dad, his mom, both at once.
Louis tried everything he could to calm him, and after a long while, Payne’s sobs faded to quiet hiccups.
Nora’s heart melted.
“I’ll go pack some things,” she said softly.
But before she could leave, someone grabbed her wrist.
