Jealousy gnawed at him, leaving his heart in tatters.
“Isn’t it enough that he’s with you? Do you really have to stay there so long?”
He couldn’t help himself—the bitterness in his voice was unmistakable.
Nora stopped struggling and let him hold her, her tone cool and detached.
“Payne was terrified. He needed me to calm him down. Besides, I’m back now, aren’t I?”
“Nora.” Daniel murmured her name, a strange undercurrent in his voice, thick with tension and longing.
He leaned in, aiming for her lips.
He needed to kiss her—only then could he hope to ease the sharp sting of jealousy twisting inside him.
Nora couldn’t see him, but she felt it coming.
The instant his lips brushed close, she turned her head just enough so that his kiss landed on her cheek instead.
The air between them shifted—what had been charged with intimacy now felt awkward, stifling.
“You don’t want to?” Daniel gave a self-deprecating little laugh. “Because he’s here?”
Nora had no idea why Daniel was always hung up on her and Louis. She’d explained it a hundred times already.
Tonight, she didn’t even want to bother.
“I’m tired. Can you let go now?”
Her answer was a rough grip on her jaw, followed by a forceful kiss pressed against her lips—anger, barely restrained, simmering in the way he held her.
Nora struggled, but he pinned her against the door, long legs trapping hers, one hand locking her wrists in his grasp.
She couldn’t break free.
Thankfully, Daniel remembered the child she carried. His grip eased, softening as he held back, careful not to hurt her.
He missed her scent.
He missed everything about her.
That familiar ache—engraved in his bones—slowly melted his jealousy into something gentler.
His hold slackened.
A sharp slap echoed in the darkness.
Daniel tongued the inside of his cheek, unfazed. He’d half-expected it.
“You’re pregnant. Don’t overexert yourself,” he said with a bitter smile.
